“I want my relationship to change!”
“I know I can do more and produce more!”
“I want change to bring me more meaning and purpose!”
Everyone in some way or form wants change in their lives. It’s one of the 3 constants in life — change, choice and principles. But very few people know where to begin. So, where is this mysterious and elusive starting point?
We may try a variety of different ways to create change, but reservations tend to arise along the way:
- How do I know that reading that book, going to that therapist, accepting that job, attending the latest webinar or even reading this article will help?
- How do I know whether it would be worth my precious time, money and effort?
- Can I guarantee it? Is it even possible to guarantee it?
The answer is YES…it is possible. The problem is that we are not willing to take the time to pay the price, to make the sacrifices we need to make now in order to reap the rewards later. We want get-rich-quick schemes and instant gratification. Working through addictions, distractions, peer pressure and social expectations is far, far too cumbersome!
Why don’t you know where to begin?
We don’t know where to begin because we lack clarity in two fundamental areas:
- Our purpose or end in mind
- Our gaps. We don’t know what we are lacking or what would get in our way…we have no idea about what we don’t know we don’t know.
As human beings, we crave a balanced mix of certainty and uncertainty in our lives. Too much certainty creates a boring and predictable life…dull. Too much uncertainty and we freeze—too frightened to make a decision or take a step in any direction! In order to find that balance we need to accept the following:
- There are things we know that we know about (pretty obvious and self explanatory).
- There are things we know that we don’t know about (at least we can do something about this).
- The biggest stumbling block is that there are crucial and vital things that we don’t know we don’t know. (This stops most of us from actually making the change we decided on).
So, where should you begin?
Identify the key areas of your life that will build meaning, purpose and success. Embark on a self assessment in these areas. Knowing our gaps means we at least know what needs to change and why. This is the first step. The second step is getting the guidance to help you make the changes you need to make in those areas.
